Hole of Horcum – Levisham – Newtondale circular walk
This is an 11 mile (17.7km) 5.5 hour circular walk that combines the Hole of Horcum with the forest at Newton Banks and heads down to Levisham Station and the North York Moors Railway. For this walk we meet at the Hole of Horcum carpark situated on the A169. Meet time is 09.30 for a 10.00 start
This walk starts by crossing the main road from the carpark where you are immediately exposed to the outstanding view across the Hole of Horcum. We follow the moorland track across the top of the bowl on excellent walking terrain and head towards Dundale Pond. At Dundale Pond we turn right and leave the main track and head off to Levisham Station. We then follow the forestry paths along Newton Banks to Farwath, from here we start the steady ascent towards Levisham village. From the village we head back to the moor, turn right and follow Dundale Griff into the basin and low Horcum, we then follow the main trail back to the start and to the carpark.
What you will need
In order for you to enjoy and take full advantage of the events on offer it is imperative that you look after yourself and turn up with the appropriate kit. We highly recommend suitable walking shoes/boots, proper outdoor clothing for the time of year and a reasonable level of walking fitness. Unfortunately young people under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
Safety and the Weather
As the group leader, I am responsible for your safety and will be more attentive to your needs throughout, and may show more caution than individuals might when walking on their own.
II undertake continuous risk assessment, and may take the decision to change or modify walking plans at short notice. This most commonly occurs in bad weather conditions. I do lead walks in all weather, so long as it is safe to do so.
