Northern Moors - Captain James Cook Country
- Whats included
The Northern Moors are a striking, historic and a stunningly authentic area of the North York Moors. Follow in the footsteps of the young explorer James Cook who would take time out from the family farm at nearby Great Ayton to climb Roseberry Topping, Nicknamed Yorkshire’s Matterhorn, because of the distinctive shape of its summit, Roseberry Topping has wonderful views in all directions. From the summit you will clearly see Captain Cook’s Monument, a very popular destination for walkers, which itself has panoramic views along the edge of the Cleveland Hills and deep into the North York Moors. This walking holiday gives you the option to explore part of the striking Yorkshire Heritage coastline, heading south to some of the most beautiful bays on the Yorkshire coast. The original village of Runswick bay slipped into the sea in one tragic night in 1664, now rebuilt boasts one of the longest sandy beaches and some excellent coastal walking.
In the picturesque village of Staithes the little harbour is still full of the traditional locally built fishing boats, known as cobles, clearly identified by their original Nordic design. Once one of the largest fishing ports on the north east coast, todays catch is more likely crab and lobster.
Prices are based on two people sharing en-suite accommodation, staying on a bed & breakfast basis. This walking holiday includes all transport to and from the trail for each days walking.
